Project Title: Engineering a Custom 1000L "Geo-Brew" System to Harness Iceland's Natural Energy
Client: "Vikingur Brewing," a new brewery founded by a former mountain guide and a geologist, dedicated to creating beers as pure and elemental as the Icelandic landscape itself.
Location: A small town along the Golden Circle tourist route, near Reykjavík, Iceland.
Iceland, the land of fire and ice, offers brewers two extraordinary gifts: arguably the world's purest, softest glacial water, and an abundance of clean, cheap geothermal energy. The founders of "Vikingur Brewing" didn't just want to build a brewery; they wanted to build an Icelandic brewery. Their vision was to create a sustainable operation that was a true extension of the environment, using the Earth's heat to power their boil and the ancient glacial water as the soul of their beer. They needed an engineering partner who could think beyond traditional boilers and design a system that could plug directly into the power of the island itself.
Creating a brewery in harmony with Iceland's unique environment required innovative thinking and precision engineering to overcome four main challenges:
Harnessing Geothermal Energy: This was the project's cornerstone. Standard breweries use gas-fired boilers or electric heating elements. The client wanted to use the readily available geothermal hot water/steam from their local utility. This required a completely custom heating solution capable of efficiently transferring geothermal heat into the brewing vessels.
Preserving Water Purity: Iceland's water is a brewer's dream—incredibly soft and pure. The entire system, from pipes to tanks, had to be designed and finished to the highest standards to ensure that this pristine water was never compromised, preserving its unique character in the final product.
Aesthetics of "Fire & Ice": As a destination on a major tourist route, the brewery had to be a showpiece. It needed an aesthetic that told the story of Iceland—rugged, modern, and elemental. The look and feel were just as important as the function.
Logistical Precision for a Remote Island: Shipping a complete brewery to an island nation demands meticulous planning. The solution had to be a complete turnkey package, pre-assembled and tested, as sourcing a missing component locally would be nearly impossible and cause significant delays.
CASSMAN delivered a groundbreaking solution designed to integrate seamlessly with Iceland's natural advantages: a 1000L 3-Vessel Brewhouse with a custom Geothermal Interface.
Key System Features:
Custom Geothermal Heat Exchanger: This was the core innovation. Instead of a traditional boiler, we engineered a high-efficiency, plate-and-frame external heat exchanger. This unit acted as the "engine" of the brewhouse, using the 120°C geothermal fluid from the building's loop to rapidly heat the mash tun and bring the kettle to a rolling boil. This resulted in a 100% emission-free heating process.
"Arctic Modern" Aesthetic: To capture the Icelandic spirit, the brewery was constructed with a brushed 304 stainless steel finish, giving it a rugged yet sophisticated look that evokes volcanic rock and glacial ice. The design featured clean lines and an open, accessible layout, making it a stunning centerpiece for the brewpub.
Sanitary-Polished, "Pure Water" Path: Every surface that would come into contact with the Icelandic water—from the water inlet pipes to the mash tun, kettle, and fermenters—was polished to a sanitary, mirror-like finish. This prevented any potential for microbial growth or mineral leaching, ensuring the water's natural purity was the foundation of every beer.
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) & Turnkey Logistics: Before shipping, the entire brewhouse was fully assembled and water-tested in our factory. We worked closely with the client's geothermal engineers to simulate the energy inputs. The system was then carefully disassembled, labeled, and packed with detailed 3D assembly guides, ensuring a smooth and predictable installation on-site.
Our approach was built on deep collaboration to bring this unique vision to life.
Geothermal Energy Consultation: We held extensive meetings with the client's local energy consultants to understand the precise temperature and flow rates of their geothermal source. This data was critical for sizing and designing the custom heat exchanger.
3D Design & Virtual Walkthrough: Given the remote location, we created a detailed 3D model of the entire brewery. The client could take a virtual tour, approving every detail of the layout and aesthetic before a single piece of steel was cut.
Integrated Control System: The PLC control system was programmed not to control a boiler, but to control the flow of geothermal fluid through the heat exchanger, providing precise temperature control for mashing and boiling.
On-Site Commissioning Supervision: A CASSMAN engineer traveled to Iceland to oversee the final installation, ensuring the brewery integrated flawlessly with the building's geothermal infrastructure and training the brewers on their unique, sustainable system.
Vikingur Brewing launched to immediate acclaim, becoming a benchmark for sustainable business in Iceland.
Zero-Emission Brewing Realized: The brewery successfully operates with a near-zero carbon footprint for its heating needs, saving thousands in energy costs and becoming a powerful marketing story.
Critically Acclaimed Beer: The combination of ultra-pure water and precise temperature control resulted in exceptionally clean, crisp, and expressive beers. Their Pilsner and Pale Ale, in particular, were praised for their pure flavor profile.
A Landmark Tourist Destination: The story of a "volcano-powered brewery" combined with the stunning "Arctic Modern" aesthetic made it an essential stop for tourists, driving significant revenue for the brewpub.
The Founder's Dream Achieved: The co-founder stated, "We gave CASSMAN a challenge: to help us brew with the very power of Iceland. They didn't just sell us a standard product; they engineered a connection to the earth. Our beer tastes like our home because it is literally forged from it."
The Vikingur Brewing project is a powerful example of CASSMAN's commitment to innovation and adaptation. We believe the best engineering works in harmony with its environment. By designing custom solutions that leverage unique local advantages like Iceland's geothermal energy, we empower brewers to create businesses that are not only profitable and efficient but also sustainable and deeply authentic.
For brewers who seek to brew with the elements, CASSMAN engineers the connection.
