Project Title: A CRN & CSA Certified 5BBL Brewing System Engineered for a Craft Brewery in the Canadian Prairies
Client: "Prairie Sun Brewery," a new brewery startup focused on creating high-quality ales and lagers using locally sourced Alberta barley.
Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Introduction
Launching a brewery in Canada requires more than just a passion for beer; it demands a deep understanding of the country's stringent regulatory landscape. The founders of "Prairie Sun Brewery" in Calgary had a vision to celebrate the rich agricultural heartland of Alberta by brewing with local ingredients. However, they knew their biggest initial challenge was sourcing a brewing system that could meet Canada's mandatory and complex safety certifications: CRN (Canadian Registration Number) for pressure vessels and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) for electrical components. They needed a manufacturing partner who was not just a builder, but an expert in navigating these legal requirements.
Building a brewery for the Canadian market presents a formidable set of non-negotiable challenges:
Mandatory CRN & CSA Certification: This was the primary obstacle. All pressurized equipment (like fermenters and brite tanks) must have a CRN registered with the provincial safety authority (in this case, ABSA in Alberta). All electrical panels and components must be CSA certified (or equivalent, like ULc). Failure to comply means the brewery cannot legally operate.
Durability for a Climate of Extremes: Calgary experiences harsh winters. The brewery equipment, especially the glycol chilling system, needed to be robust and reliable enough to perform flawlessly in a climate with significant temperature swings.
Efficiency is Key: With high energy costs, the brewery needed to be as efficient as possible. This meant excellent insulation and an effective heating system to minimize operational expenses.
Flexibility for Local Grains: The plan to use local Alberta barley, known for its high quality, required a mash tun designed for high-efficiency extraction and consistent performance.
CASSMAN tackled the challenge head-on, delivering a complete 5BBL 3-Vessel Steam-Heated Brewhouse that was fully engineered, documented, and certified for the Canadian market.
Key System Features:
Complete CRN & CSA Certification Package: This was the cornerstone of our solution. CASSMAN managed the entire complex process:
CRN: We worked with an authorized inspection agency to engineer, test, and register CRNs for all fermenters, brite tanks, and the steam jacket on the kettle for the province of Alberta.
CSA/ULc: The main control panel and all associated electrical components were built and certified to CSA/ULc standards, complete with the official mark, guaranteeing electrical safety and compliance.
Robust Steam Heating System: A steam-heated system was chosen for its power, efficiency, and precise temperature control, ideal for producing a wide range of beer styles from crisp lagers to rich stouts.
"Winter-Ready" Construction: All tanks and piping were fabricated with high-quality 304 stainless steel and insulated with thick, high-density polyurethane. This superior insulation minimizes thermal loss, reducing the workload on both the heating and cooling systems, saving energy year-round.
High-Efficiency Brewhouse: The 3-vessel system (Mash Tun, Lauter Tun, Kettle/Whirlpool) was designed for optimal workflow and efficiency. The mash tun geometry was optimized for the high-quality local barley, ensuring the brewer could achieve excellent extract yields.
Our process was defined by meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to regulatory excellence.
Compliance-First Engineering: The project began with our engineering team collaborating with Canadian certification bodies. All designs were pre-approved to ensure they met CRN and CSA standards before any steel was cut.
Third-Party Verification: Throughout the manufacturing process, the equipment was subject to inspection by third-party agencies to verify weld quality, material traceability, and pressure test results, as required for CRN registration.
Seamless Documentation and Shipping: CASSMAN provided a flawless documentation package, including all CRN and CSA certificates. This ensured the equipment cleared Canadian customs without delay and was ready for inspection upon arrival in Calgary.
Support for Local Installation: We provided clear, detailed schematics and remote support to the local tradespeople, ensuring the electrical and plumbing connections were done correctly and in accordance with local codes.
Prairie Sun Brewery launched on schedule, avoiding the costly delays and legal issues that often plague improperly certified projects in Canada.
Passed Inspections with Ease: Thanks to the pre-certified equipment, the brewery passed its ABSA and electrical safety inspections on the first attempt. The founder stated, "The peace of mind was invaluable. CASSMAN delivered a truly 'plug-and-play' compliance solution. The inspectors saw the CRN numbers and CSA sticker and were immediately satisfied."
Reliable Year-Round Production: The robust, well-insulated system has performed reliably through its first Canadian winter, maintaining stable fermentation temperatures and keeping utility costs in check.
Celebrating Local Flavor: The brewery is now a proud part of Calgary's craft scene, producing acclaimed beers that showcase the quality of Alberta's agricultural products.
A Smart, Secure Investment: By investing in a fully compliant system from the start, the client protected their investment and built their business on a solid, legal foundation.
The Prairie Sun Brewery project highlights CASSMAN's expertise in navigating some of the world's most challenging regulatory environments. Our ability to deliver turnkey, fully certified brewing systems for markets like Canada removes the single biggest obstacle for many brewery startups. We don't just sell steel; we sell certainty and compliance.
For a brewery that meets the highest standards of safety and quality, trust CASSMAN to manage the complexity so you can focus on the craft.
